Frequently Asked Questions

Learn More About AMU and the Health Sciences Major

Whether you’re an active-duty servicemember, veteran, or recent high school student, AMU’s programs emphasize career-relevant skills through coursework that connects scientific theory with practice. Get answers to common questions about our online health sciences bachelor’s degree and how this program prepares students to pursue their career goals.

A health sciences education gives learners a solid foundation of practical skills that healthcare practitioners employ to serve patients. Coursework may also help prepare students for future academic endeavors, such as graduate studies, nursing school, and/or medical school programs.

Health sciences programs examine how healthcare providers apply their expertise to promote wellness among individuals and communities. Learners discuss the social, political, and economic aspects of healthcare, as well.

AMU’s program explores the roles of genetic technology, microbiology, and epidemiology within the healthcare field. Students consider how breakthrough discoveries continue to advance modern medicine.

Select courses integrate virtual lab assignments that support weekly lectures. Through these interactive activities, learners gain practical context for the theories they discuss in class.

The decision to pursue a biology or health sciences degree will depend on your personal interests and academic goals. For example, biology may be best for learners interested in hands-on research.

Conversely, health sciences may be suitable for learners seeking a broad overview of the medical field. Health education programs typically combine interdisciplinary coursework with an emphasis on patient care, disease prevention, and healthcare administration. Studying health sciences may therefore be ideal for students who wish to learn about promoting wellness and improving health outcomes.

Still, both biology and health sciences degrees can lay the groundwork for students interested in advancing to graduate programs.

The allied health field includes many healthcare occupations that employ evidence-based practices to support positive health outcomes. Career opportunities include specialized roles, such as those in occupational therapy and physical therapy, for example. Allied health professionals also include those who hold health care administration positions, like health services managers.
Some universities offer degree programs that combine online classes with in-person, hands-on learning. At AMU, students complete virtual lab activities online. Courses also have no set login times, and learners complete weekly assignments on their own schedules.
