About This Program

The University’s Security Management NanoCert® programs provide a broad understanding of current and emerging threats and challenges affecting government, public, and private organizations and entities. 

This program provides government and security professionals and those in the military with an opportunity to advance their knowledge in the analysis and evaluation of sources, assets, systems, and events key to identifying potential risks and vulnerabilities critical to ensuring the protection of public and private safety.

This graduate NanoCert may be of interest to those who wish to pursue a future graduate degree. The courses in this NanoCert are designed to bring you closer to completion of the following degrees: Master of Public Administration and the MA in Security Management.
  
NOTE: Completion of this program does not award any professional certifications but can be applied toward graduate coursework ultimately leading to a master’s degree. 

What You Will Do

  1. Evaluate the role of the bureaucracy in implementing, interpreting, establishing, evaluating, and enforcing public policy at the various levels of state and local government
  2. Appraise the current trends in government ethics and ethical codes/regulations to include distribution methods and enforcement

This course addresses the moral versus legal aspects of public administration. Ethical controversies and real and hypothetical solutions to the issues will be addressed through the components of individual attributes, organizational structure, organizational culture and societal expectations. The administrator’s role in ethical decision-making will be examined along with external and internal controls. The course will offer studies in leading and building organizations of integrity and diversity.

The study and practice of public administration is explored in its political context. The student is introduced to the environment within which public administration functions and the dynamics of behavior within large organizations. How choices are made among competing policies, factors affecting the implementation of policy, and the role of policy evaluation in shaping policy choices are examined. Managing large-scale bureaucratic organizations is analyzed including the role of leadership, the management of personnel and finances, and the role of communication in inter- and intra-organizational relations.

The course will focus on tools that the professional security manager can use to increase productivity and lower operational cost. Topics explored: personnel security issues (background checks), budgeting, security liability, human resources issues and equal opportunity rights.

Includes alumni who graduated with an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree from APUS. Student loan debt is defined as student loans and private education loans used for tuition, fees, living expenses, and book costs associated with courses taken at APUS. Many APUS students receive military tuition assistance and veterans education benefits, which are not student loan debt.

*Cost Per Credit Hour

The Preferred Military Rate is $250 per credit hour for undergraduate and  master's-level courses. This rate is available to all U.S. active-duty servicemembers, National Guard members, Reservists, and military families, including parents, spouses, legal partners, siblings, and dependents.
