The Academic Scholar Award recognizes graduating students who distinguished themselves through exceptional academic achievement, scholarly engagement, and meaningful contributions to the American Military University (AMU) learning community.
As one of the University's highest academic honors, this award celebrates undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and a commitment to learning that extends beyond the classroom.
Each year, one undergraduate and one graduate student from each academic school are selected to receive this prestigious recognition.
- Have a conferred degree, or submitted a graduation application for a degree expected to be conferred, between August 1, 2026 and June 1, 2027.
- Have completed or be completing an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree.
- Meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement:
- Associate and bachelor's degree students: 3.70
- Master's degree students: 3.90
- Demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and scholarly engagement throughout their academic program.
- Be in good academic and conduct standing with the University.
Eligible individuals may apply directly, or an application may be submitted on their behalf by a faculty member, staff member, student, alum, supervisor or another individual familiar with their accomplishments.
Whether applying directly or having an application submitted on their behalf, a complete application must include:
- Completed application form.
- One faculty letter of recommendation.
- One example of a high-quality assignment that includes faculty feedback.
- A personal reflection (maximum 250 words) or a two-minute video describing the applicant's academic journey and accomplishments.
- A current résumé highlighting academic, scholarly, leadership, service and professional accomplishments.
All application materials must be submitted in PDF format unless otherwise specified. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
Applications are reviewed by the Academic Awards Committee using established evaluation criteria.
The committee evaluates applicants based on:
- Academic achievement.
- Scholarly conduct.
- Engagement with instructors and peers.
- Participation in classroom discussions and learning activities.
- Leadership and service within the University community.
- Additional scholarly or professional accomplishments that demonstrate a commitment to excellence.
One undergraduate and one graduate recipient from each academic school are recommended to the University Provost for final approval.

- Recipients Notified by: April 1, 2027
- Recognition: Commencement Weekend 2027
Recipients receive:
- Recognition during Commencement weekend.
- An engraved plaque and an Academic Scholar medallion.
- Travel and hotel accommodations in accordance with University award guidelines.
- Recognition in University communications.
Attendance at Commencement is encouraged but not required.
